A culture beautifully bottled…

After the Shisha shopping spree, we hit the local perfume shops because we knew we would not get these abroad again! I have been desperate to show off the beautiful, beautiful bottles they handcraft and sell here…

I tried to take pictures of as many as possible without getting into trouble; these are works of art and there are rival perfume companies all over the Middle East- big market! The locals consider perfume as an everyday important part of their appearance and presentation (men and women alike) but the Arabic perfume differs greatly to the western market scents; they are stronger, more spicy, herbal and somewhat simular to incense in the smell.

Apologies for simple iphone snaps but I think you can still see most of the details…enjoy!

Not only does the smell inside reflect in the design on the outside, to me these bottles sum up this region’s style, fashion and atmosphere… every word you could use to describe these bottles and their scent completely applies to the culture!

A Shisha shop one stop buy out…

Whilst wondering what to give the friends we are staying with in Canada as a thank you/Christmas gift, we knew we wanted to find something both original and local. Paying the last visit to our favourite Shisha shop to stock up on the flavours (we bought ALOT of boxes to ship!) we came across these wonderful sets that would make the perfect present for shisha smokers and non shisha smokers alike.

I’ve been so excited to show it off! Now unwrapped and with the happy owner I can do so…

Smoking Shisha goes hand in hand with the Middle Eastern way of life; it has been around for hundreds of years and is part of Arab culture and traditions. Instead of going out for a pint of beer to a pub, locals meet friends at a nearby Shisha cafe, smoke for about an hour and nibble on Meze (cold dishes including humous, flat bread, fattoush salad, falafel etc) and drink juices or the famous Pepsi (pronounced ‘bebsi’). There is a range of various cafes from the fancy, down to the most basic; usually set up by a local and his friends outside in the sand with high wooden benches and tables.

Now before someone wags the finger, I am not a Shisha smoker myself! Mr S loves it and I became fascinated watching him setting it up, buying the right supplies, the wonderful smell! and of course these beautiful pipes and sets. I even talked Mr S into buying me my own pipe last time we were in the shop (just because it’s pretty really) and I heard in Canada you can buy Tobacco free Shisha, so I will be looking into that!

I am playing catch up right now as I have been ill in bed for the past few days so tomorrow I will post the second exciting thing I couldn’t wait to show!
